Different flavors of health care: Alternative, Holistic, Integrative
Alternative, holistic, and Western healing tied with the Integrative Health bow.
I know I gave the definition of Integrative Health. It can still be a little hard to understand why it's different than the other healthcare systems.
We can start with the most popular, holistic health care. What is holistic health care?
It's a healthcare system that looks at the whole being. Spiritual, mind, body, social, and emotional.
This includes where they came from, their upbringing, faith, race, and lifestyle. Holistic medicine focuses on the person's wellness, and not their illness or condition.
This means they don't just see that you have depression, and give you antidepressants. It means they sit, and assess why you are feeling depressed. What could be causing the depression, and how you can move forward, and heal the depression?
They listen, and question your situation, and experiences because it's unique. Your healing path isn’t going to be the same as someone else’s so why should your practitioner act as if it is? Holistic practitioners know everyone has a unique healing path.
Alternative health care is not the typical health care that is provided. They replace modern-day treatment/Western medicine. So things like neuropathy, ayurveda, and Chinese medicine. Herbalism is also an alternative Health care because it replaces modern-day medications.
So instead of taking Advil, you take ginger or turmeric. Instead of Sudafed, you take turmeric to clear your nose out. Instead of cough medicine or antibiotics, you take honey and garlic or honey and onion. Instead of hormone balancers, you eat hormone-balancing foods. Instead of Midol, you get the right amount of iron and magnesium. Instead of heart pills, you make a dandelion tincture.
Alternative Health care replaces Western medicine.
Integrative health takes all the healthcare systems and helps them dance together. Which is beautiful.
They use Holistic healing by connecting with their clients and understanding their needs. They know the importance of a connection with your provider. Also the importance of the unique healing path of every individual.
Then they find solutions to help with the quality of life. They use Holistic and Alternative healing before going to Western medicine.
They do know that modern-day health care is needed for things like immediate care. But modern-day health care isn’t the be-all, end-all.
